Ethics and animal welfare

mouse welfare

Present

ICS does follow French and European Legislation (European Directive 86/809 CEE, French "code rural"). Thus our Institute and teams have official licenses delivered by the official regional vet (DDPP) to take care of animals and to perform protocols. All technicians taking care of mice are specially authorized.

Future

The old European directive 86/809 has been revised in order to homogenize legislation in all European countries. Thus, legislation is going to evolve, especially concerning animal welfare. All protocols shall be evaluated by a "competent authority" about the ethical aspect. The goal is that each protocol shall be approved before it is set up.

In order to anticipate this evolution, an ethical committee, called Com'Eth, exists in ICS. The main goal of the committee is to evaluate all protocols performed in our institute. In order to avoid any interest conflict, members are from both ICS and IGBMC (neighbour Institute). Following the national convention that we have signed, our members have different point of view being researchers, technicians, vets or "naive" representing the community. Moreover, our team is trained to perform those evaluations properly (the GIRCOR has set up trainings dedicated to ethical committee members). As ICS is involved in Ethics, the Com'Eth has other objectives: advise research teams, answer ethical questions, visit animal facilities to check the well going of protocols and develop an ethical way of working with animals in the long term
